What MacWhisper is for#

MacWhisper's centre of gravity is files. You give it an interview, a lecture, a voice memo, a podcast, a YouTube URL or a meeting, and it gives you a transcript. Around that it has the features a transcription workflow needs: automatic speaker recognition, batch transcription, subtitle and document export (.txt, .pdf, .docx, .srt, .vtt), 100+ languages, and automatic recording of Zoom, Teams, Webex, Skype and Discord calls with start and end detection. Transcription runs locally, so sensitive recordings stay on the Mac.

Jarvis does none of that. If your job is "I have three hours of recorded interviews and I need them as text with speakers labelled", MacWhisper is the answer and this comparison ends here.

It is also fair to say — because a lot of comparison pages get this wrong — that MacWhisper does ship system-wide dictation. The free version includes a basic form of it; Pro advertises high-quality system-wide dictation with grammar correction. So the honest framing is not "MacWhisper can't dictate". It is that dictation is a feature bolted onto a transcription app, and the product around it is built for the other job.

What Jarvis is for#

Jarvis has no file transcription at all. It is built for the live case and for what happens after the words land:

• Dictation as you speak, on-device, around 240ms, into whatever app has focus. The audio never leaves your Mac.
• Voice control of applications. "Switch to Slack and post that in #design", "reply to Sarah and say the deck is ready." It opens the app and does the thing — a real agent, not a transcript.
• Chained commands in one sentence, rather than one instruction at a time.
• Persistent local memory of your people and projects, so names and context resolve without re-explaining.
• MCP support, so it can reach Gmail, Calendar, Notion, GitHub and similar.

Price, as of July 2026#

The two-store split catches people out. Same developer, same underlying app, completely different payment model — a one-time licence direct versus a subscription on the App Store. If you want to pay once, buy direct.

Pick MacWhisper if you have recordings to turn into text. Nothing in this category does that job better on a Mac, the one-time licence is good value, and the local processing means client interviews never touch a server.
