The Pen, the Keyboard, and the Microphone
Everyone has heard that handwriting beats typing for notes. The replication is messier than the headline, and the reason the original result happened tells you what actually matters — which is not the tool.

You have heard the finding, probably second-hand: students who took notes by hand remembered more than students who typed. It became one of those facts that circulates as advice — put the laptop away.
It is worth looking at what the study actually showed, because the interesting part is the mechanism, and the mechanism tells you something that applies just as much to dictating notes as to typing them.
What the original study found#
Mueller and Oppenheimer ran the experiment in 2014. Students watched lectures and took notes either longhand or on laptops, then answered factual and conceptual questions. Both groups did about equally well on factual recall. On conceptual questions, the longhand group did better (Psychological Science, 2014).
Their explanation was not that pens are magic. Laptop users transcribed more — closer to verbatim — and verbatim transcription is shallow processing. You can type without understanding. Writing by hand is slow enough that you are forced to decide what matters and compress it, and that decision is the learning.
What the replication found#
This is the part that rarely travels with the headline.
Morehead, Dunlosky and Rawson ran a direct replication in 2019, adding an eWriter condition and — crucially — a group that took no notes at all. Performance did not consistently differ between groups. Some trends favoured longhand, but a meta-analysis of the direct replications found effects that were small and not statistically significant (Educational Psychology Review, 2019).
The variable underneath#
Strip both studies to first principles and the causal chain is:
- A note is useful in proportion to the thinking that produced it.
- Thinking happens when you compress — decide what matters, restate it.
- Anything that makes capture effortless removes the pressure to compress.
- Handwriting compressed because it was slow, not because it was handwriting.
That reframes the whole debate. The pen was a speed limit, and the speed limit was doing the work. Remove the limit — with a keyboard, or with dictation, which is faster still — and nothing forces the compression unless you add it back deliberately.
Which makes dictation the sharpest case#
Speaking is faster than typing, which is precisely why it is the easiest way to produce a large pile of words you have not thought about. If you dictate a lecture or a meeting verbatim, you have manufactured a transcript, not a note.
The fix is not to stop dictating. It is to move the compression to a place where it still happens:
- Dictate the summary, not the content. After the meeting, say what it meant in three sentences. That is the compression step, out loud.
- Capture verbatim, then compress within the day. A transcript is a raw material. Review it once and write what you would tell a colleague.
- Say the question, not the fact. "Why did revenue drop in March" is worth more later than four bullets of numbers.
Where tools genuinely help#
Once you accept that compression is the job, tools split cleanly:

An assistant helps most on the parts that are genuinely mechanical: capturing without slowing you down, and holding the material so you can compress it later. Capture with whatever is fastest. Compress deliberately, always.
The pen won its famous experiment by accident of being slow. You can have the speed and the learning, but only if you put the thinking step back in on purpose.
Frequently asked questions
Is it really better to take notes by hand?
The 2014 study found a conceptual-understanding advantage for longhand, but a 2019 direct replication found only small, non-significant effects. The safer conclusion is that verbatim capture without processing is the weak strategy, whichever tool produced it.
Why did handwriting help in the original study?
Because it is slower. Laptop users transcribed closer to verbatim, which is shallow processing. Writing by hand forces you to select and compress, and that selection is where the learning happens.
Is dictating notes a bad idea then?
Only if you dictate verbatim and stop there. Speaking is the fastest capture method available, which makes it excellent for getting material down and the easiest way to skip the thinking. Dictate the summary, or compress the transcript the same day.
Should I let AI summarise my notes for me?
For reference material, fine. For anything you need to understand, no — the compression is the learning, so outsourcing it produces a document you own and knowledge you do not.
